CANADA'S CONCUSSION LEADERSParachute Canada InfographicParachute, Canada’s national charity dedicated to injury prevention, in 2016 was awarded a two-year grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to lead the creation of a national Guideline for Concussion in Sport, and to engage at least 20 National Sports Organizations in adopting these guidelines to their own sport. Parachute’s succeeded far beyond expectations set out in the grant — over-performing in every measure and also multiplying its work in concussion with related programs not funded by PHAC.
The formal grant wound up in spring 2018, and a news release and celebration announcement about the success was set for June 2018 in Ottawa attended by the Minister of Sport and Minister of Health. Parachute CEO Steve Podborski and his team knew there was so much more work to do and, daily, the charity received calls from partners and new parties wanting to continue and extend the concussion protocol awareness work. It was crucial to show, in a clear and compelling way, just what work Parachute had done, and what was still left to do, to make a case for funders — including the ministers and their staff — to consider further support for Parachute’s concussion leadership.
Creative Director Kelley Teahen (Parachute’s Director of Communications and Marketing) had worked before with information designer Chris Moorehead to map complex information to tell a story and they paired up to create “Canada’s Concussion Leaders”. The piece starts with a quote praising Parachute’s current work and then opens out to a two-year timeline of achievements. Next is a visual representing the work remaining to do in the concussion project, ending with a quote from Parachute’s CEO, Olympian Podborski.
It has been called the “oh wow” document by those who have received it. Even without looking at the many details, it shows clearly the depth and breadth of Parachute’s work and success. It is forming a key presentation as Parachute seeks continued support for its important work in concussion recognition and management.
It should be noted that this work was performed pro bono — though the designer WAS rewarded with many tasty rhubarb baked goods, courtesy of Parachute Vice President Pam Fuselli!
