ZERO-BUDGET CDFashion Show/Dance Party Invitations & Mix CD
One
of the negative aspects of being a graphic designer is that your
children expect their projects, presentations, and party invitations
to be professionally designed and typeset.
My
daughter has a keen interest in fashion design, and decided to
celebrate her 12th birthday with a fashion show and "after party". Dad
was therefore drafted to design party invitations and event swag.
Since money is always tight with two highly acquisitive children in the
house, I was determined to complete this project using only the
materials I could find in my home studio—a MacBook Pro, a B&W
laser printer, blank CDs/labels, and some coloured paper and
card stock.
The
results of my handiwork are presented here. It took me a while to
remember that fluorescent colours cannot be reproduced within the RGB
gamut, so the photos are more subdued than the actual items. I should
have paid closer attention to those first-year Colour Theory lectures!
The
entire project, including invitations and a dance mix CD provided to
each attendee, cost less than $50 for a quantity of 40. Obviously, this
is not inclusive of design and production time—but children always
consider parental labour to be “free”. I shudder to think of what my
daughter will expect of me for her wedding!
